Your National ResourcesFor years, we’ve been helping people with low vision from Memphis to Nashville, and in fact throughout all of Tennessee, to see better and enjoy fuller lives. But it doesn’t stop there! We hope to connect you to some of the greatest low vision resources in the area to help assist in a more fuller life.

  • Braille Institute – Dedicated to eliminating barriers to a fulfilling life caused by blindness and severe sight loss. Even though the Braille Institute is located in California but serves the needs of vision impaired people throughout the United States. For those that are blind or suffering from impaired vision, the Braille Institute offers Braille publications and audio publications. They also offer literacy programs, rehabilitation programs, and childhood developmental programs for children up to the age of five.
  • Sight Savers America – More than 30,000 blind or visually impaired children take advantage of Sight Savers America’s thorough eye care services and vision aids each year. These products and services are offered regardless of the payment ability of the child’s family. As a result, visually impaired children can see well enough to have scholastic success.
  • U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs – Veterans of the US Armed Forces with impaired vision or blindness can get help from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. The VA Department will assist with medical treatments and rehabilitation services, as well as putting veterans in touch with organizations that supply adaptive technology products to restore visual freedom.
  • Enhanced Vision – Enhanced Vision is a leading developer of assistive technology for the visually impaired including Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Cataracts, Retinitis Pigementosa and Diabetic Retinopathy. Low vision assistive technology enables people to read, write and fully participate in life.

Your Local Tennessee Resources

  • Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired – Located in Memphis, the Clovernook Center empowers people who are blind and visually impaired to be self-sufficient and full participants in their communities. They offer comprehensive training for orientation, mobility, and independent living. They also offer rehabilitation and vocational training, job placement services, youth services, counseling, and recreational opportunities. Many services can be paid for by Medicare, state or county funds, private donations, or foundation grants. If third-party funds are not available, an income-based fee is set so that the services are affordable to all.
  • Meritan – Teaching people how to live with low vision and vision impairments, Meritan provides courses on orientation skills, mobility skills, and Braille. They work with people of all ages, as well as working directly with school systems. They also help teach people how to perform the common activities of daily life, such as cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, using the phone, and managing money.
  • Tennessee Department of Human Services Blind & Visually Impaired – If you are looking for a rehabilitative service for blind and visually impaired adults, you’ve come to the right place.  Here you will find independent living services to help blind and visually impaired people of all ages live independently, an automated newspaper reading service, and job placement services. The Blind and Visually Impaired Services department is part of the greater Tennessee Department of Human Services.
  • Tennessee School for the Blind – Blind or visually impaired students from kindergarten through twelfth grade can attend the Tennessee School for the Blind or participate in their outreach programs throughout the state. All legally blind students are provided with a world-class education and the skills they need to succeed after they graduate, including independent living skills and the ability to use adaptive technologies.
